NOVEMBER 2018

November has brought with it more and more work, and with that, a more wintery feel to the days and weeks... we're very glad that most of our work has been indoor based recently!

We finished off October by being highly commended in "The Documentary - Digital Media" category at The Radharcs for the beautiful videos that Seamus shot and edited earlier this year; "The Martin Family Vignettes" which were commissioned by the Carmelite Orders. We were also delighted to see a win for Peadar King and KMF productions for their "Brazil’s Black Genocide" programme  on RTÉ1 which was a part of their incredible series "What In the World" - which co-incidentally, was edited in Kairos, by Seamus!

Our University students began the month with their various projects; First Years filming short interview pieces, Second Years recording their drama piece in the T.V. studio, and our Third Years beginning their pre-production meetings for their short films.

At the same time, our first piece of production work this month was working with Maynooth University, live-streaming and recording their Graduation ceremonies on October 31st & November 1st with over 1000 students graduating over the two days.

We then moved on to Enniskillen in preparation for our Remembrance Sunday broadcast for RTÉ to mark the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice. It was a very poignant occasion, especially the minute's silence at the eleventh minute of the eleventh hour, just after The Last Post and that famous verse from "For The Fallen" echoed around the Cathedral. We are so very thankful to the Rev. Kenneth J. Hall, and all at St. Macartin's Cathedral who helped to share such a special Remembrance Service. You can watch the Service itself on the RTÉ player by clicking here.

As soon as we returned from Enniskillen; we were straight into Croke Park to start live-streaming the 31st Social Justice Ireland Policy Conference. It was a busy day with a range of speakers from The Journal.ie's acting editor Christine Bohan, actor Emmet Kirwan, as well as short testimonies from representatives of the National Youth Council of Ireland regarding current and potential policies in Ireland. You can see the full videos from all the speakers on the day by taking a look at the Social Justice Youtube Channel. You can also see what the day looked like from our point of view here.

We were privileged to film in Maynooth University Library at the Ken Saro Wiwa Seminar to mark Ken's 23rd anniversary; and the launch of the second edition of the book "Silence Would Be Treason", The Seminar featured a keynote address from Firoze Manji, publisher of the book, as well as the presentation of the Ken Saro-Wiwa School Poetry Prize.

During of all this, our radio team were on the road too, for rehearsals and broadcasts from Athy to Banagher to Donegal and beyond; and December looks to be a similar month on the road for them!

Meanwhile on terra firma here at the offices, it's commissioning round time of year again, so some of our team are currently working on different proposals and pitches - coffee and biscuits have made the process a tad more tolerable!

We've also started working with our chosen parish on the traditional RTÉ Christmas Eve Midnight Mass, and while mid-November may seem to be an early time for that, the fact that the Mass will be simulcast throughout Europe that night means that a lot more work is required - from translating readings & prayers into several European languages, to deciding what hymns and songs to sing for the Mass - but we're looking forward to it!
