JANUARY 2019

December 2018 was such a busy month for us that we're really only getting a chance to reflect upon it now as 2019 begins!

At the end of November, we gathered together in Kairos to mark the recent 10th anniversary of the company's founder, Fr. Mick Melvin. We watched a small excerpt of the incredible achievement that was Mass from the Reek, which also took place 10 years ago, as well as sharing memories of Mick both in and out of the workplace. We finished by watching a short behind the scenes piece about the Croagh Patrick broadcast, which featured everything from camera crew racing each other up the mountain, to Mick gently guiding the live broadcast from the OB truck parked below the mountain. It was a wonderful afternoon in celebration of a wonderful man - ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís.

We welcomed several groups of media students of the younger variety as our ever-popular TY TV studio dates were almost fully booked for the month; with schools traveling from Ballymahon, Drogheda and every where in between. You can find out more about those days by clicking here.

Our Media Students had a busy month too, with our First Years shooting and then showing their documentaries, ranging in a variety of topics from homelessness to music to personal identity. Our Second Years meanwhile created their own 20 min. live TV studio show from scratch, with musical guests, round table discussions and debates, as well as VT features on Christmas, cars, and on-street Vox Pops.  Finally, our Third Years were shooting, editing & then showing their short self-scripted film, some of which showed twists of a Sixth Sense variety!

We had several in-house edits going on over the month for clients, as well as two interesting shoots that arrived for the same date! So on the morning of Dec. 18th, some of our cameras and crew went to Áras an Uachtaráin whilst Ita went to Bewleys on Grafton St.!

We were privileged to film the Christmas Address from President Higgins in Áras an Uachtaráin, as he spoke of the need for a “renewed sense of solidarity” with those who were most vulnerable in society both at home and abroad.

It was fitting then that the same day, Trocaire combined with The Trinitones to perform a short piece in Bewley's Cafe to raise awareness of their Christmas Appeal which aimed to help families facing war and starvation in countries like South Sudan and Yemen. You can find out more about their Christmas Appeal by clicking here.

December saw our Radio team on the road again, from beautiful broadcasts in Dublin, Dundalk and nearby with our neighbours in Maynooth, to the West for a joyous liturgy with the Faith & Light Community in Sligo - you can take a listen back to some of those Masses here.

We finished off our TV broadcasts for the year with a wonderful Midnight Mass from The Church of the Immaculate Conception in Ashbourne, which was broadcast throughout Europe. Eurovision broadcasts are always a tad busier than our regular broadcasts, as there are many translations and pronunciations required for the different countries that choose to take the feed of our Mass. However, Fr. Derek, the choir and the congregation in Ashbourne did themselves (and us!) proud with their readings, hymns and the Mass itself. You can watch it back (until Jan. 24th) on the RTE Player here. It was a busy end to a busy year, but that's a lovely complaint to have going into a New Year.

So as 2019 begins, we'd like to take the opportunity to say, athbhliain faoi shéan is faoi mhaise daoibh!
